Ingredients
1/2 cup unsalted butter
1 cup brown sugar
2 tablespoons light corn syrup
1 loaf thick-cut brioche or challah bread
5 large eggs
1 cup heavy cream
1 cup whole milk
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
1/4 teaspoon salt
Instructions
- Melt butter in a saucepan over medium heat. Stir in brown sugar and corn syrup until smooth. Pour into a greased 9×13-inch baking dish.
- Slice bread into thick slices and arrange over the caramel layer, slightly overlapping.
- In a large bowl, whisk eggs, heavy cream, milk, vanilla, and salt until smooth.
- Pour custard evenly over the bread, pressing down lightly to soak.
- Cover and refrigerate overnight (at least 8 hours).
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake uncovered for 35–40 minutes until golden and set.
- Let cool slightly before serving, spooning caramel sauce from the bottom over each portion.
Notes
Use day-old bread for better texture and absorption.
For extra flavor, add a pinch of cinnamon or nutmeg to the custard.
Cover with foil during baking if the top browns too quickly.
